Today I’ll present two evergreen songs created by the legendary Madan Mohan.

This gem is from the movie Chirag (1969) directed by Raj Khosla, featuring Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh. The song has been sung for the most part by Mohd. Rafi and also by Lata Mangeshkar.

As much as Mukesh’s success and fame was due to his association with Raj Kapoor and Shankar-Jaikishan, several of the classic songs of his were from other composers, notably Salil Chowdhury. Mukesh Chandra Mathur was one of the legendary singers of the golden era of Hindi film music. The team of Raj Kapoor, Mukesh and Shankar-Jaikishan was successful in making films like Awara and Shree 420 famous among people as far away as Russia.

Here is a song, used as the leitmotif for the Basu Bhattacharya film Teesri Kasam, where Mukesh sings for Raj Kapoor.

Today let us walk down memory lane and listen to the versatile genius of Mohd. Rafi whose range spanned from the raga based bhajan Mann Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj in Baiju Bawra (Naushad – Shakeel Badayuni) to the jazzy Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho in Hanste Zakhm (Madan Mohan – Kaifi Azmi) to the ghazal Tumhari zulfke saaye mein sham kar lunga in Naunihaal (Madan Mohan – Kaifi Azmi).
In Baiju Bawra, the lead role of a musical genius who could compete with the great Tansen, played by Bharat Bhushan was made believable by Rafi’s renditions.
