O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aayi – Parakh (1960)

Salil Chowdhury created some awesome music – which he utilized in both Bengali and Hindi. One of these is the gem “Na jeona, rajani akhono baki” sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Bengali. The same tune was used for the Bimal Roy film, Parakh (1960) in this song, again by Lata – picturized here on Sadhana and Vasant Choudhury. Incidentally, Salil Chowdhury was also the writer for this story.

Lyrics:

O sajanaa, barkhaa bahaar aai
Ras ki phuhaar laayi, ankhiyon me pyaar laayi

Tumko pukaare mere mann kaa papiharaa
Meethi Meethi agnii mein, jale moraa jiyaraa

Aisi rimjhim mein o saajan, pyaase pyaase mere nayan
Tere hi, khwaab mein, kho gaye
Saanvli saloni ghataa, jab jab chhayi
Ankhiyon men rainaa gayi, nindiyaa na aayi

Prem Jogan Ban Ke – Mughal-E-Azam(1960)

Many consider the Mughal-E-Azam soundtrack to be Naushad’s masterpiece. While there may be difference of opinion on that, it was no less a masterstroke by K.Asif and Naushad to get Bade Ghulam Ali Khan to sing in a Hindi film, which was Mughal-E-Azam. The Khan didn’t disappoint. Presented below is his classical rendition based on the raga Sohini, apparently being sung by Tansen in the background of the picturization on Anarkali (Madhubala) and Saleem (Dilip Kumar).
