Puchho na kaise – Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen(1963)

No post about Sachin Karta would do justice to him if it doesn’t explore his classical roots. A disciple of the noted Bengali classical singer, Bhismadev Chattopadhyay, he created several raga based film songs. The most noted among these is this gem, sung by Manna Dey. The original song in Bengali is by Kazi Nazrul Islam. A Bengali rendition by Asha Bhonsle is available here.

Raga: Ahir Bhairav, Thaat: Bhairav

Lyrics: Shailendra

Puchho na kaise maine rain bitai
Ik pal jaise ik yug bita
Yug bite mohe neend na aayi

Ik jale deepak ik man meraa
Phir bhi naa jaaye mere ghar ka andhera
Tadpat tarsat umar gavaayi

Na kahin chanda na kahin taare
Jyot ke pyaase mere nain bichaare
Bhor bhi aas ki kiran na laayi

Mere Saajan Hai Us Paar – Bandini(1963)

Sachin Karta himself has sung a few songs he composed for in Hindi films. One of these – which utilizes his nasal tone and bard-like voice, evokes the Bhatiali folk and the life of the rural boatmen of Bengal.

Lyrics: Shailendra

O re maajhi, O mere maajhi
Mere sajaan hai us paar
Main mann-maar hoon is paar
O mere maajhi Ab ki baar
Le chal paar Le chal paar

Mann ki kitab se tum
Mera naam hi mita dena
Gun to na tha koi bhi
Avgun mere bhula dena
Mujhe aaj ki bida kaa
Mar ke bhi rahega intezaar

Mat khel jal jayegi
Kehti hi aaj mere mann ki
Main bandini piya ki, Main sangini hoon saajan ki
Mera kheenchti hai aanchal manmeet teri
