Lag ja gale – Woh Kaun Thi (1964)

This gem is from another movie Woh Kaun Thi (1964) directed by Raj Khosla, featuring Manoj Kumar and Sadhana.  Music is by Madan Mohan and the lyrics have been penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan . Sung by the Nightingale of India – Lata Mangeshkar.

Lyrics:

Lag jaa gale ke fir ye haseen raat ho na ho
Shaayad fir is janam mein mulaqaat ho na ho

Hum ko milee hain aaj ye ghadiyaan naseeb se
Jee bhar ke dekh lijiye  humko kareeb se
Fir aap ke naseeb mein ye baat ho na ho
Shaayad fir is janam mein mulaqaat ho na ho

Paas aiye ke hum nahin aayenge baar baar
Bahein gale mein daal ke, hum ro le jaar jaar
Aakhon se fir ye pyaar ki barsaat ho na ho
Shaayad fir is janam mein mulaqaat ho na ho

Teri aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai- Chirag (1969)

Today I’ll present two evergreen songs created by the legendary Madan Mohan.

This gem is from the movie Chirag (1969) directed by Raj Khosla, featuring Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh. The song has been sung for the most part by Mohd. Rafi and also by Lata Mangeshkar.

Lyrics penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Teri aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai

Ye uthe subah chale Ye jhunke shaam dhale
Mera jeena mera marna inhi palkon ke tale

Palkon ki galiyon mein chehre baharon ke haste huye
Ae mere khwabon ke kya kya nagar is mein baste huye

In mein mere aanewale zamane ki tasveer hai
Chahat ke kajal se lkhi huyi meri taqdeer hai

Main hoon kahin inka saya mere dil se jata nahi
Inke siva ab to kuchh bhi nazar mujhko aata nahi

Mann tadpat hari darshan ko aaj – Baiju Bawra (1952)

Today let us walk down memory lane and listen to the versatile genius of Mohd. Rafi whose range spanned from the raga based bhajan Mann Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj in Baiju Bawra (Naushad – Shakeel Badayuni) to the jazzy Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho in Hanste Zakhm (Madan Mohan – Kaifi Azmi) to the ghazal Tumhari zulfke saaye mein sham kar lunga in Naunihaal (Madan Mohan – Kaifi Azmi).
In Baiju Bawra, the lead role of a musical genius who could compete with the great Tansen, played by Bharat Bhushan was made believable by Rafi’s renditions.

Composer: Naushad
Raga: Malkauns Thaat: Bhairavi

Nainon mein badra chhaye – Mera Saaya (1966)

Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan

Nainon mein badraa chaye bijlii si chamke aaye
Aise mein balam mohe darwaa lagale

Madiraa mein doobii ankhiyaan Chanchal hai donon sakhiyaan
Jalte rahenge tohe Palkon ki pyaarii bathiyaan
Sharmaa ke denge tohe madiraa ke pyaale

Prem deewaani hun main Sapnon ki raani hun main
Pichle janam se teri prem kahaanii hun main
Aa is janam mein bhi tu apna bana le

Zara Si Aahat Hoti Hai – Haqeeqat (1964)

This classic by Madan Mohan and Lata Mangeshkar is from the film Haqeeqat (1964), picturized on Priya Rajvansh.

Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi

Zara Si Aahat Hoti Hai To Dil Sochta Hai
Kahin Yeh Woh To Nahin

Chhup Ke Seene Mein Koi Jaise Sadaa Deta Hai
Shaam Se Pehle Diya Dil Ka Jalaa Deta Hai
Hai Usi Ki Yeh Sadaa, Hai Usi Ki Yeh Adaa

Shakl Phirti Hai Nigahon Mein Wohi Pyaari Si
Meri Nas Nas Mein Machalne Lagi Chingari Si
Chhoo Gayi Jism Mera, Kiske Daaman Ki Hawa

Agar Mujhse Mohabbat Hai – Aap Ki Parchhaiyaan (1964)

Classic gem from Aap ki Parchiyan (1964) by Madan Mohan and Lata, this song is picturized on Dharmendra and Supriya Choudhury.

Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan

Agar Mujh Se Muhabbat Hai Mujhe Sab Apane Gam De Do
In Aankhon Kaa Har Ik Aansuu Mujhe Meri Qasam De Do

Tumhaare Gam Ko Apanaa Gam Banaa Luun To Qaraar Aaye
Tumhaaraa Dard Seene Mein Chhupaa Luun To Qaraar Aaye
Vo Har Shay Jo Tumhen Dukh De Mujhe Mere Sanam De Do

Sharik-E-Zindagi Ko Kyuun Sharik-E-Gam Nahin Karte
Dukhon Ko Baat Kar Kyuun In Dukhon Ko Kam Nahin Karte
Tadap Is Dil Ki Thodi Si Mujhe mere Sanam De Do

In aankhon mein na ab mujhko aansoo nazar aaye
Tanahat ki rahe aankhen sada yeh honth muskayen
Mujhe apni sabhi aanhe sabhi dard-e-alam de do

Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha – Anpadh (1962)

Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar has enthralled us over the years with her golden voice. At her peak during the forties to the seventies, Lata sang for almost every major composer and lyricist. Some of her best songs however are with her favorite composer Madan Mohan and with Salil Chowdhury. Today’s feature is about a few of these songs.

This ghazal is from the movie Anpadh (1962), picturized on Mala Sinha and Dharmendra.

Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan

Aap ki nazron ne samjha pyaar ke kaabil mujhe
Dil ki ae dhadkan thaher jaa, mil gayee manzil mujhe

Ji hamein manzoor hai aap ka yeh faisla
Keh rahi hai har nazar banda parvar shukriya
Hanske apni zindagi mein kar liya shaamil mujhe

Aap ki manzil hoon main, meri manzil aap hai
Kyoon main toofaan se daroon, mera saahil aap hai
Koi toofaanon se keh de, mil gaya saahil mujhe

Pad gayee dil par mere aap ki parchhaaiyaan
Har taraf bajne lagee saenkdon shehnaaiyaan
Do jahaan ki aaj khushiyaan ho gayee haasil mujhe
