Teri aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai- Chirag (1969)

Today I’ll present two evergreen songs created by the legendary Madan Mohan.

This gem is from the movie Chirag (1969) directed by Raj Khosla, featuring Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh. The song has been sung for the most part by Mohd. Rafi and also by Lata Mangeshkar.

Lyrics penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Teri aankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai

Ye uthe subah chale Ye jhunke shaam dhale
Mera jeena mera marna inhi palkon ke tale

Palkon ki galiyon mein chehre baharon ke haste huye
Ae mere khwabon ke kya kya nagar is mein baste huye

In mein mere aanewale zamane ki tasveer hai
Chahat ke kajal se lkhi huyi meri taqdeer hai

Main hoon kahin inka saya mere dil se jata nahi
Inke siva ab to kuchh bhi nazar mujhko aata nahi

Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Pe Rona Aaya – Hum Dono (1961)

If Din Dhal Jaye is S.D. Burman‘s masterpiece, then this one is the showpiece from Jaidev. Only Rafi, with his emotive voice could evoke such pathos in this song, picturized on Dev Anand.

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Pe Rona Aaya
Baat Nikli To Har Ik Baat Pe Rona Aaya

Hum To Samjhe The Ki Hum Bhool Gaye Hain Unko
Kya Hua Aaj Yeh Kis Baat Pe Rona Aaya

Kis Liye Jeete Hain Hum Kiske Liye Jeete Hain
Baarha Aise Sawalat Pe Rona Aaya

Kaun rota hai kisi aur ki Khatir ai dost
Sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aayaa

Aapke haseen rukh pe aaj naya noor hai – Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi (1966)

This lilting gem by Rafi is as mesmerizing today as it was when this was first released in 1966, for the film Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi. Sing along with the cadence of the piano as you watch Dharmendra serenade Tanuja and Mala Sinha with this gem of a ghazal.

Composer: O.P. Nayyar

Lyrics: Anjaan

Aap ke haseen rukh pe aaj naya noor hai
Mera dil machal gaya to mera kya kasoor hai
Aap ke nigaah ne kahaa to kuchh zaroor hai

Khulee laton ke chhaanv mein khila khila ye rup hai
Ghataa se jaise chhan rahi, subah subah ki dhoop hai
Jidhar nazar moodi, udhar surur hi surur hai

Jhuki jhuki nigah mein bhi hain balaa kee shaukhiyaan
Dabee Dabee hasee mein bhi tadap rahi hain bijaliyaan
Shabaab aap kaa, nashe mein khud hi choor choor hai

Jahaan jahaan pade kadam wahaan fiza badal gayi
Ke jaise sarabasar bahaar aap hi mein dhal gayi
Kisi mein ye kashish kaha jo aap mein hujoor hai
Mera dil machal gaya to mera kya kasoor hai

Mann tadpat hari darshan ko aaj – Baiju Bawra (1952)

Today let us walk down memory lane and listen to the versatile genius of Mohd. Rafi whose range spanned from the raga based bhajan Mann Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj in Baiju Bawra (Naushad – Shakeel Badayuni) to the jazzy Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho in Hanste Zakhm (Madan Mohan – Kaifi Azmi) to the ghazal Tumhari zulfke saaye mein sham kar lunga in Naunihaal (Madan Mohan – Kaifi Azmi).
In Baiju Bawra, the lead role of a musical genius who could compete with the great Tansen, played by Bharat Bhushan was made believable by Rafi’s renditions.

Composer: Naushad
Raga: Malkauns Thaat: Bhairavi

Din dhal jaye – Guide(1965)

From the film Guide, with lyrics penned by Shailendra, this balmy gem of a song is truly one of the masterpieces woven by the adakari of Mohd. Rafi and the brilliant composition by S D Burman. Presented in all its glory here, with the picturization on Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman.

Lyrics:

Din Dhal Jaaye Hai Raat Na Jaaye
Tu To Na Aaye Teri Yaad Sataaye

Pyaar Mein Jinke Sab Jag Chhoda
Aur Huye Badnaam
Unke Hi Haathon Haal Hua Yeh
Baithe Hai Dil Ko Tham
Apne Kabhi The Ab Hain Paraaye

Aisi Hi Rimjhim Aisi Phuhaarein
Aisi Hi Thi Barsaat
Khud Se Judaa Aur Jag Se Paraaye
Hum Dono The Saath
Phir Se Woh Saawan Ab Kyon Na Aaye

Aise to na dekho – Teen Deviyaan(1965)

The trio of SD Burman – Mohd. Rafi – Dev Anand gave us several of the classic songs – from films like Bambai ka Babu, Tere Ghar Ke Samne, Guide and Jewel Thief. One of the gems that S D Burman composed was given voice by Mohd. Rafi in the film Teen Deviyaan.

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Aise To Na Dekho, Ke Humko Nasha Ho Jaye
Khoobsurat Si Koi Humse Khata Ho Jaye

Tum Humein Roko Phir Bhi Hum Na Ruken
Tum Kaho Kaafir Phir Bhi Aise Jhuken
Kadam-E-Naaz Pe Ik Sajda Ada Ho Jaye

Yoon Na Ho Aankhen Rahen Kaajal Gholen
Badh Ke Bekhudi Haseen Gesu Kholen
Khul Ke Phir Zulfen Siyah Kali Bala Ho Jaaye

Hum To Masti Mein Jaane Kya Kya Kahen
Lab-E-Naazuk Se Aisa Na Ho Tumhein
Beqarari Ka Gila Hum Se Siva Ho Jaye

Kuhu Kuhu Bole Koyaliya – Swana Sundari(1957)

Of late, it has been all rock and pop and fusion – mostly plagiarisms ruling the Indian film music industry. Gone are the days when film music was based on Indian classical music – either Hindustani or the Carnatic variety. In today’s post we’ll listen to two raga-based songs which had captured the imagination of the nation during the period when they were released.

Both these songs are based on the raga Sohini, of the thaat Marwaa. It is a pre-dawn raga, to be performed between 2am – 4am, and is said to be the favorite of Akbar and Man Singh.

The first song is from the film Swarna Sundari, a 1957 remake of the Telugu film Suvarna Sundari. What is interesting to note about this song is that its four verses are based on four different ragas. One of these is Sohini, the others are Bahaar (thaat: Asavari) , Jaunpuri (thaat: Asavari) and Yaman (thaat: Kalyan).

Music by P. Adinarayana Rao. Sung by Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

Lyrics:

[Raga Sohini]

Kuhu-kuhu bole koyaliya
Kunj-kunj mein bhanvre dole gun-gun bole

Saja singaar ritu aayi basanti
Jaise naar koi ho rasvanti
Sa ni dha ma dha ni sa ga ma ga ma dha ni sa
Re sa ni dha ni sa re sa ni sa re sa ni
Dha ni ni dha ni ni dha ni ma dha dha ma dha dha ma dha
Sa re ga ma dha na

Daali-daali kaliyon ko titaliyaan choomein
Phool-phool pankhadiyaan khole amrit ghole

[Raga Bahaar ]

Kaahe ghata mein bijuri chamke
Ho sakta hain megharaaj ne baadariya ka
Shyaam-shyaam mukh choom liya ho
Chori-chori man panchhi ude naina jude

[Raga Jaunpuri ]

Chandrika dekh chhayi piya chandrika dekh chhayi
Chanda se milke man hi man main muskaayi
Chhayi chandrika dekh chhaayi
Sharad suhavan madhu man bhavan
Virahi jano ka sukh sara saavan

[Raga Sohini ]

Chhaayi-chhaayi poonam ki ghataa ghoonghat hata

[Raga Yaman]

Saaras raat man bhaaye priyatama kamal-kamalini mile
Kiran haar damke jal mein chaand chamke
Man saanand, aanand dole re
Ni re ga ma dha ni sa dha ni sa sa ni sa ga re ga
Sa re ni sa dha ni ma dha sa ni re ni re
Dha ni dha ni ma dha ma dha ga ma ga ma
Ga ma dha ni sa ga ma dha ni sa dha ni sa

Teri pyaari pyaari soorat ko – Sasural (1961)

The first post has to be about Mohd. Rafi. This leading playback singer of the Indian film industry during the fifties to the seventies, has given us a treasure trove of classic songs.

Here is one of his evergreen gems from the film Sasural which won him the 1961 Filmfare award for Best Playback Singer. The music for this song was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan

Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri

Teri Pyaari Pyaari Soorat Ko Kisiki Nazar Na Lage
Chashme Baddoor
Mukhde Ko Chhupa Lo Aanchal Mein Kahin Meri Nazar Na Lage
Chashme Baddoor

Yoon Na Akele Phira Karo Sabki Nazar Se Dara Karo
Phool Se Zyaada Nazuk Ho Tum Chaal Sambhalkar Chala Karo
Zulfon Ko Gira Lo Gaalon Par Mausam Ki Nazar Na Lage
Chashme Baddoor

Ek Jhalak Jo Paata Hai Raahi Wahin Ruk Jaata Hai
Dekh Ke Tera Roop Salona Chand Bhi Sar Ko Jhukata Hai
Dekha Na Karo Tum Aaina Kahin Khud Ki Nazar Na Lage
Chashme Baddoor

Dil Mein Chube Woh Teer Ho Tum Chahat Ki Taqdeer Ho Tum
Kaun Na Hoga Tum Se Diwaana Pyaar Bhari Tasveer Ho Tum
Nikala Na Karo Tum Rahon Par Sadkon Ki Nazar Na Lage
Chashme Baddoor

Abi Na Jao Chhod Kar – Hum Dono (1961)

Evergreen hero Dev Anand and playback singer Mohd. Rafi had a very successful team with several hits. One of the classics from the film Hum Dono (1961) is this song – a duet by Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhonsle.

The music for this song was composed by Jaidev and the lyrics penned by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Lyrics:

Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahin

Abhi abhi to ai ho abhi abhi to
Abhi abhi to ai ho bahar banke chhai ho
Hawa zara mahak to le nazar zara bahak to le
Ye sham dhal to le zara
Ye sham dhal to le zara ye dil sambhal to le zara
Main thodi der jee to lun nashe ke ghunt pee to lun
nashe ke ghunt pee to lun
Abhi to kuchh kaha nahin abhi to kuchh suna nahin
Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahin

Sitare jhilmila uthe
sitare jhilmila uthe charag jagamaga uthe
Bas ab na mujhko tokana
Bas ab na mujhko tokana na badhake rah rokana
Agar main ruk gayi abhi to ja na paungi kabhi
Yahi kahoge tum sada ke dil abhi nahin bhara
Jo khatm ho kisi jagah ye aisa silasila nahin
Abhi nahin abhi nahin nahin nahin nahin nahin
Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahin

Adhuri aas
Adhuri aas chhodke adhuri pyaas chhodake
Jo roz yunhi jaogi to kis tarah nibhaogi
Ke zindagi ki raah men jawaan dilon ki chah men
Kayii muqam aenge jo ham ko azamaenge
Bura na mano baat ka ye pyaar hai gila nahin
Haan yahi kahoge tum sada ke dil abhi bhara nahin
Haan dil bhara nahin nahin nahin nahin nahin
